The Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra have to be two of the UK’s best-loved family hatchbacks. Both stylish, both easy to handle and both practical for commuting, day-tripping or daily chores. And when it comes to running costs, they’re both hard to beat too.

For the last two decades they’ve competed on our roads with the Astra currently most popular used car while the Ford Focus is runner up for best-selling new car, after its little brother, the Fiesta.

Which one will you choose? With a great range of used Ford Focus and a good selection of used Vauxhall Astras for sale at Autostore, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Let’s take a look at what makes them so popular…

Style

If cool curves are your thing, then either the Ford Focus or the Vauxhall Astra will fit the bill.

The Focus boasts slim headlights and a sophisticated twist thanks to a front grille that can be compared to a classic Aston Martin. A rear spoiler and great-looking alloy wheels add a touch of sportiness, while adaptive lighting and options such as retracting panorama glass roof ensure that light is always where you need it. With 5-door or estate options, you’ll find excellent practicality in the Style, Zetec, ST-Line, Active, Titanium, Vignale and ST trims which provide a wide range of specification choices.

The Vauxhall Astra is equally as practical, also available as a 5-door or Sports Tourer (estate) with a slightly sharper look and wider headlights than the Focus. As with the Focus, a black centre pillar provides the illusion of a floating roof that can be enjoyed along with the choice of trims, such as Design, Tech Line, Sri and Elite, most with tinted rear windows and electric adjustable wing mirrors.

Comfort

Inside the Ford Focus, you’ll find an ergonomic interior with a raised dashboard putting all features within easy reach. A handy powered, low-loading tailgate gains easy access to the 316-litre capacity boot with height adjustable floor for extra storage (575 litres in the Estate). Additional convenience comes from features such as Ford’s standard quick-clear heated windscreen and infotainment system with voice controls.

Despite being shorter than the Focus, the Vauxhall Astra has a bit more of a spacious feel in the cockpit as well as the rear with a 370-litre boot (540 litres in the Sports Tourer). Good suspension allows for a smooth drive, regardless of the terrain you’re tackling while an 8-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support will keep you relaxed, even on long drives.

Handling

No matter which trim you choose, the Ford Focus provides an engaging drive with very capable cornering. A top speed of 138 mph and 0-62mph in as little as 8.3 seconds makes it very responsive. Cruise control and optional parking sensors make the Focus a breeze to drive whether out and about in town or heading out on the motorway.

The Vauxhall Astra has excellent grip and agility with speed sensitive power steering providing appropriate control whether negotiating city streets or country lanes. There’s not much in it when it comes to performance, with the Astra boasting similar figures to the Focus - a top speed of 132 mph and 0-62mph in 8 seconds.

Costs

Of course, you’ll always get more for your money when you buy a used car from Autostore.

Where the used Ford Focus for sale at Autostore is concerned, Style, Zetec, ST-Line, Active, Titanium, Vignale and ST trims provide a wide range of specification choices, with prices starting at under £9,000, less than half the price of a new Ford Focus. As for running costs, you’ll find the diesel returns around 74 mpg while 1.0-litre petrol alternatives still provide a creditable output in the region of 60 mpg. Insurance-wise, you’re looking at no more than class 15 for the 1.0-litre engine, rising to 34 or thereabouts for the 2.0-litre options.

You can find a quality used Vauxhall Astra for sale at Autostore for around £10,000, a saving of nearly £9,000 on a brand new entry-level Design trim. And up to a whopping £18,000 discount on a SRi trim. Both petrol and diesel alternatives claim to achieve over 62 mph with the turbo petrol options returning just under 50 mph. Whichever engine and trim combo you choose, you’ll be unlikely to pay more than class 18 in insurance costs.

As you can see, there really isn’t a lot to choose between these two popular hatchbacks. It really is down to personal preference, so take a trip to your local Autostore used car dealership at Penrith or Lancaster to discover which is your ideal family hatchback - Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra - the choice is yours!
